ROYAL BATHS

(Kanine Records / Woodsist Records)
Jeremy Cox and Jigmae Baer started Royal Baths without a plan in mind but soon the foundation for their writing found inspiration from Cox’s interest in the alternate and open tunings of delta blues, their shared fascination in the African rhythm of early Chicago blues, and Baer lyrically attempting to reflect with black humor and little judgment, and the thrills and troubles they stumble through. The band began touring before their first album was released, opening for bands the first two of which Baer had previously been a member: first with Thee Oh Sees, next Ty Segall, the Fresh and Onlys, and Wild Flag. The Royal Baths went on their first headlining tour after that, where they found inspiration to write their second full-length record, to be completed this time in a studio on higher quality analog tape. They declared the recording process complete only when their meager bank accounts were drained and they had borrowed too much money. Although the Royal Baths developed amidst the encouragement of friends in San Francisco’s garage scene they felt stifled by comparisons to a movement where their sound didn’t belong to, so they upped and moved to New York to assert their sound. The album ‘ Better Luck Next Life ‘ is set to be released by Kanine Records on February 7th, 2012.

CHEROKEE RED

In the late winter of 2011 in the low lying valley of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, Charles Davis and Christiana Bartolini, then acquaintances, inadvertently discovered that they were both searching for a new music project to pursue. Christiana, the lead singer, brought her laptop recording studio and a bag of various hand percussion instruments and Charles, pianist & guitarist, skillfully utilized those staple instruments and together they began combining their respective rough drafts of music. Fast forward to the spring of 2011- Charles and Christiana had numerous completed (but stripped down) songs and felt it was time to bring new perspectives into the group to help thicken and broaden their sound. In June of 2011, the stars perfectly aligned and Christiana & Charles effortlessly found three new members- Dirk Dekker (bassist/guitarist), Andrew Sgarlat (drums/guitar) and Brittany Thomas guitar/ vox) with Andrew and Brittany contributing to the song writing process- and the group soon formed Cherokee Red. The band began playing shows in the summer of June 2011, gaining a quick following of eager fans of all ages and drawing comparisons to the likes of Mazzy Star, Beach House and Fleetwood Mac. Cherokee Red have been self-producing their first full length album which will debut in the spring of 2012.

Listen to :: Slowdance

January 20, 2012

Let’s get straight to the point here: Slowdance are going to blow our collective minds in 2012. Don’t believe us? Well here is why you need to pay attention..

Slowdance are a five-piece band who call Brooklyn home. Their music walks a fine line between pop sensibility and romantic exoticism. They released a magnificent EP titled ‘ Light & Color ‘ in 2011 which garnered praise from the likes of Spin, Stereogum & Nylon Magazine. The band also spent time on the road playing gigs alongside DOM, Anika, Ducktails & the legendary Gary Wilson. Now in 2012 they are gearing up for an even busier year. They have a track on the new Kitsuné Records compilation that is due out in early February. (Each track on the compilation was hand-picked by Kitsuné chief Gildas-Loaec.) There are also plans to release a new single thru White Iris Records in the coming months plus an appearance at this years SXSW.

This weekend Slowdance will be playing two events in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Saturday January 21st at The Bog in Scranton, PA with Cherokee Red (9 PM / $5) & Sunday January 22nd at The Crimson Lion in Wilkes-Barre, PA with Mike Quinn & Mariah Welch (7 PM / $5).

Here we have some footage of Dope Body on tour performing the song “Forcefield” in 9 different cities (including our show at Redwood Art Space in Wilkes-Barre, PA). The footage was shot by Angel Ceballos for the music documentary “Adventures in Killing the Radio Star”. The audio for this was recorded live at the Soft Approach in Providence Rhode Island. The performances shown are in: Ithaca, Wilkes-Barre, Philly, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Boston, Providence, Toledo and Kutztown.

The band has posted a few dates up on their Tumblr along with titles of forthcoming records in 2012.

One of which will be released by Drag City Records and titled ‘Natural History’.

Let’s be honest: 2011 wasn’t a very good year for music.* There were the usual stand-out artists (a few who made my list), but as for new music, it kinda really sucked.  For me personally this was a good thing, because being the music junkie I am, that meant less albums I felt I just HAD TO check out, and was able to just vibe on what I had.  I enjoy reading a handful of blogs year-end lists because I normally forget to snag an album here and there during the year I’ve been meaning to give a listen, or I find an album I haven’t heard about yet from a person who shares similar tastes as me.  Also, if I keep seeing the same named hyped over and over again (no matter how annoying the name is) I sometimes give in because I want to know what the big deal is or someone personally told me to give it a try.  But you know what? A lot of bands/artists that were hyped last year turned out to be really boring, trite, or doing something 23987 bands have already done in 2010 (a pretty great year, might I add).

So with that said, here are my favorite albums of the year. I decided to make one because there are few that I have not seen ONCE on other year end lists.  Hypem, I’m looking at you. Such a disappointing list (even though though the “albums” tab is user-based–which also–YIKES the general public has snoozeworthy taste in tunes).  I didn’t limit my list to a specific number, and they are in no particular order. These are the albums I find myself listening to over and over again.

 A few video clips have surfaced from a handful of events  that we hosted back in 2010. One of these clips included  Tombs performing at Cafe Metropolis one month before the venue closed for good. Since then they have released a critically acclaimed album titled  “ Path of Totality “, which was chosen as Decibel Magazine’s Album of the Year in 2011, and continued to tour the world extensively.
